ROOIBOS TEA – 100% Organic and Caffeine Free
Rooibos, directly translated from Afrikaans, means “Red Bush’. Rooibos (Aspalathus linearis) is a green shrub native to South Africa and which grows only in a small area known as the Cedarberg, in the Western Cape Province. It is naturally caffeine free and has been brewed for centuries by the indigenous Khoisan people of Southern Africa.
Rooibos has a rich, red colour, with a naturally sweet and slightly nutty flavour. Rooibos tea is widely consumed in South Africa in the same manner as black teas, with milk, sugar or lemon according to personal preference. Rooibos can be served as an espresso drink in cappuccinos and lattes and its naturally sweet flavour lends itself well to iced-teas.
Safe for Children and Babies
Rooibos is also widely consumed as a safe alternative to black tea for babies, children, pregnant women and the elderly as it is naturally 100% caffeine free and non-allergic.
Rooibos tea does not contain caffeine and has low tannin levels compared to black tea or green tea. Rooibos is high in anti-oxidants and is said to naturally boost energy and reduce inflammation.
Rooibos and Climate Change
The rooibos plant is endemic to a small part of the Western Cape province of South Africa, called the Cedarberg. It grows in a symbiotic relationship with local micro-organisms and therefore does not grow anywhere else. Scientists speculate that climate change may threaten the future survival of the plant and the rooibos industry. Some claim that increasing temperatures and decreasing rainfall may result in the extinction of the plant within the next century.
