It all began on somewhere on the southern tip of Africa where Kyle and Lauren Weller, a married couple from Johannesburg, South Africa, had a dream to take a passion for food and turn it into a way of life. As an ecologist Lauren was never fully satisfied working in the corporate world and wanted to do something more -something that fed people. As time went on the idea of moving out of the big city and developing a small farming or food business began to take hold in us.
In December 2016 after reading the book “The Third Plate” by Dan Barber something clicked. It was not just about feeding peoples bellies it was also about feeding peoples souls and feeding the planet. When we take food production and remove it so completely from nature, the way modern foods systems do, we remove nutrition, we destroy the soils and we damage the very ecosystem that feeds us. This was about becoming part of the solution.
Fast forward to 2018, now based in Windsor Ontario, Well Baked was born.
